We talked about how he's doing in school. I brought up our concerns about him not being able to focus on any task very long, is "all over the place" most of the time, doesn't sit still, has a hard time following directions, etc. I mentioned that he's so smart and has no problem with the academic part of school (as long as he can sit still long enough to do the work), but he's WAY more interested other things. For instance, if an ambulance goes by, he'll sit and ask over and over again...how many people were in there, was the siren on, was it a diesel, did it have 2 exhaust, where was it going. His ped told me that most boys his age do have these "issues," but since Caleb is very prone to ADD/ADHD and that's something we'll have to monitor. (Premature babies are more likely to have attention issues.) He did mention that while medications are very helpful for a lot of kids (they don't prescribe them until at least first grade), he would be very hesitant to prescribe them for Caleb because they have a huge affect on appetite and kids tend to lose weight. We have conferences in a couple weeks at school, so I will discuss his "busyness" with his teachers. If they feel there's a big difference between his attention span and that of his male peers, then we'll revisit his IEP in the public school system. (He has not qualified for any assistance/services at this point.)
We also talked about his pulmonary appointment. He said that he'd call the pulmonologist once all of the tests are back to see where she's coming from. (Imagine that! Two doctors talking to each other so everyone is on the same page...what a great idea!!)
All in all, it was a short and sweet appointment. It ended with Caleb putting a bunch of tongue depressors in his mouth and then putting them back with the others in the drawer. Lovely. Have I ever mentioned that this kid is BUSY??!!
But isn't he ADORABLE??!!
